Music Tutors
Meet our music teachers at Performance Academy
Our music tutors have decades of teaching and performing experience through numerous professional working bands, orchestras, collaborations, recording projects and solo careers. They are qualified, patient (yet driven), and provide measurable, reachable, goal-oriented results.

I don’t have many “superpowers,” in this life, but I’m very proud of MY “superpower,” which is the fact that I can remember songs – 1000s of songs.
To me music is my passion, and my emphasis for my students is to have FUN! Yes, it is HARD WORK, but the aim is for personal growth and enjoyment.
My method of teaching is to get my students to play what music and songs that THEY like, and we LEARN from playing songs. Together with my keyboard drums, we (on occasion) form informal an impromptu “mini-band”…this is especially aimed at bass players whose role it is, is to always be a part of an ensemble of sorts.

How to choose a music tutor
Deciding on a music teacher comes down to compatibility and “fit” for your age, level and desired outcomes.
Any type of learning requires commitment from both the student and the teacher, but it is important to take into consideration how your teacher may make you feel (motivated and satisfied), how they are able to make you understand what you are learning, the method in which they challenge you and, how much you are progressing.
Choosing a music teacher is an important decision that can significantly impact your musical journey. Here are some considerations to help you make an informed choice:
Qualifications and/or experience
Look for music tutors with a solid educational background in music or relevant experience. Consider the teacher’s performance experience and how it aligns with your musical goals.
Instrument or service specialisation
If you have a specific instrument or music style in mind, find a teacher who specialises in that area. Some music tutors may focus on beginners, while others specialise in advanced or professional-level instruction.
Teaching style
Consider the teaching methods employed by the teacher. Some may emphasise classical techniques, while others focus on contemporary or popular styles. Look for a teaching style that matches your learning preferences and goals.
Reviews and recommendations
Read reviews and testimonials from current or former students to get insights into the teacher’s effectiveness and teaching style.
Ask for recommendations from friends, family, or fellow musicians.
Trial Lesson
Some music tutors offer trial lessons. Take advantage of this opportunity to assess the teacher-student dynamic and see if their teaching style resonates with you.
Communication skills
A good music teacher should be able to communicate concepts clearly and adapt their teaching approach to suit your learning style. Assess their ability to provide constructive feedback in a supportive manner.
Lesson structure
Inquire about the music tutor’s lesson structure, including the duration, frequency, and any additional materials provided.
Ensure that the scheduling and format of lessons align with your availability and preferences.
Cost and policies
Understand the teacher’s fee structure and any additional costs, such as materials or recital fees. Clarify the cancellation policy, rescheduling options, and any other terms of engagement.
Location and accessibility
Consider the location of the lessons, whether they are in a studio, the teacher’s home, or your own home. Evaluate the convenience of the location and whether it fits into your schedule.
Additional services
Some teachers offer extra services like performance opportunities, music theory workshops, or studio recordings. Assess whether these align with your interests.
Personality fit
Consider the teacher’s personality and teaching approach. A good rapport with your teacher can enhance the learning experience.
Long-Term Commitment
Discuss your long-term musical goals with the music tutor and assess if they are committed to helping you achieve those goals.
